Quick Biography

Shamelessly stolen from A Wiki of Ice & Fire. Also this page as well.

Benjen attended with his siblings the Tourney at Harrenhal, the younger brother of Ned. At the tournament his sister rescued their vassal Howland Reed from an attack by some squires. Benjen offered Reed a horse and some armor so he could challenge his attackers. During the feast he teased Lyanna when she cried for the song of the dragon prince. During the Robert's Rebellion Benjen was probably in Winterfell. He joined the Night's Watch shortly after for reasons unknown, where he took the following oath:

Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death.
I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children.
I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post.
I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls.
I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers,
the shield that guards the realms of men.
I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.

The greatest antagonist to the Watch has been the Others, a race of mystical creatures not seen for thousands of years. For the vast majority of the Watch's recent history, they have served as a practical penal colony, filled with petty and violent criminals, political exiles, and vanquished nobility. Although their numbers are dwindling and the title of Brother of the Night's Watch no longer holds the honor and prestige it once did, the core of the Watch is still composed of capable and dedicated men. These men now serve the Watch and the Realm of Men by helping ensure that the barbaric human settlers of the areas north of the Wall, known as wildlings, are not allowed to raid south of the Wall, which has been their ancient task all but forgotten by time and practical, modern concerns.

Like many of the other Starks , Benjen holds contempt for the Lannisters. He becomes defensive when conversing with Tyrion Lannister at the Wall, specifically when discussing the King's policies.

Benjen wrote a letter to Eddard at Winterfell updating his brother on the strength of the Night's Watch and the threat of Mance Rayder. When King Robert visits Winterfell the Starks give a feast in his honour. Benjen is present as well. He talks with Jon and the boy asks to be allowed to join the Night's Watch. Benjen tells Jon to wait a few years until he is certain but Jon insists. When back at the Wall Benjen is busy with his duties as First Ranger and does not have much time for Jon. He reminds Jon that the men of the Night's Watch leave their families and loyalties behind when they join the brotherhood.

Later the Lord Commander Jeor Mormont sends Benjen with a force to find Ser Waymar Royce, who has not returned after a ranging. Benjen does not return either. The men of the Watch speculate about his fate.

Physical Abilities

He is a strong, experienced fighter, very skilled in ranging/tracking beyond the Wall, and his name commands respect, but Benjen is without exceptional ability.

Superhuman Abilities

None that I'm aware of.

Unusual or Magical Possessions

Just the clothes on his back, which includes part of his armor and a sword.

Appearance

He has sharp features and blue eyes. He is very thin. His PB is James Blunt.

Personality

Benjen displays a cool calm, taking his tasks at the Wall very seriously. Even so, he inwardly never loses his ease of amusement; he simply keeps his smile contained a great deal of the time. As the only surviving sibling to Ned, he values his family and friends, but duty has become his companion. As younger son with no interest in marriage, his career options were few, but he feels well-suited to the Wall, and though he takes pride in his Stark lineage, he does from his position as First Ranger as well.

Being at the Mansion, he will have to learn how to relax again, but I suspect his smile will come easier. He might seem unfriendly to strangers, and he doesn't give his trust easily. Once a friend, he is loyal to a fault.
